What the dress code on a golf course?

I'm going on a beginners golf day this weekend, what should I wear?

As others have said, it varies, but commonly:
    On the course:
    > Proper golf shoes are a must.
    > Collared shirt/polo shirt (NB not football or rugby shirts) must be worn
    > No jeans, cords, camouflage trousers or joggers/shell-suit bottoms. Chinos are ideal, or tailored shorts (not sports shorts or cut-offs).
    > If shorts are worn, socks should be either knee-length (in any colour) or white and ankle-length
    > Shirts should be tucked into trousers
    In the clubhouse:
    > No caps
    > No rain gear
    > "Proper shoes" only – no trainers (Golf shoes with plastic [NB NOT metal] spikes may be worn in the "spike bar" but not the main lounge)
    > No jeans etc

If there's a meal, check first as ties (and even, at some old-fashioned clubs, blazers) may be required.

Change into your golf gear in the clubhouse, not the car park.

In addition, remember it's bad form to use a mobile on the course unless one of your group has a heart attack or similar(and very often the same applies inside the clubhouse).
